7am: We will drive you from Kigali to Lake Burera under the Virunga volcanoes, passing through the town of Musanze.
10am: Close to the Ntaruka power plant, a motorboat will be parked for you to allow you to explore three of the six islands of Lake Burera. On Birwa I, the first among them, you will climb to the primary school perched above. A cultural troupe of pupils will meet you dancing and there will be stories to listen to and colourful baskets to spend your francs on โ this may well be the deal of the tour!
1pm: On Munanira Island local fishermen will have cooked lunch for you, their daily catch mixed with staple foods and vegetables. (If their current location is elsewhere, the itinerary will be adjusted accordingly.)
2pm: The third island on your program will be Cyuza. Cyuzaโs inhabitants have been moved to the shore by the government to ease service provision, and a private investor has turned it into a paradise for budget travellers. This is a magnificent site for volcano views, and for your bottled refreshment.
3pm: The motorboat journey will proceeds northwards, to the mountain of Mweru under which famous kings reportedly walked on water and played table games. After a short but intense climb and a 30-minute lakeshore hike you will reach the village of Gitare. You will hear about the mining history of this area, see the tomb of the man who started it, and finally touch the magical tree that helps women ... you will see!
5pm: You will be picked by our vehicle and taken even closer to the volcanoes, to Kinigi where Villa Gorilla will be your home for the night.
7am: You will jump on a mountain bike (alternative transport solutions will be available if you donโt fancy cycling) and use the wide dirt road near the border of the national park to travel in the direction of Gisenyi (Rubavu).
12pm: Your lunch will be at the Imbabazi Center of Hope in Mugongo. The lush farm compound next to Imbabazi used to be the home of Rosamond Carr (1912-2006), the author of โLand of a Thousand Hills: My Life in Rwandaโ and a former fashion illustrator who spent half a century in Africa. After the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsis she established an orphanage for over a hundred children. You will get an opportunity to tour the premises and hear the whole story.
1pm: Our car will drive you towards Karongi. A section of this trip you can do by foot, on the world-famous Congo Nile Trail that offers fantastic views of Lake Kivu.
5:30pm: Moriah Hill Resort will await you in Kibuye, a place perfect for peaceful relaxation after a physically demanding day. Your dinner will be served in its restaurant.
7am: After breakfast you will proceed to the rainforest of Nyungwe National Park, known for its primates and the only canopy walk in this part of Africa.
11am: This is the starting time for the 160-metre walk above the canopies of fascinating trees. If you are lucky, monkeys and other wildlife will check on you on the way.
1pm: Your lunch will be in the form of a delightful rainforest picnic.
2pm: Through the glory of Nyungwe you will slowly but surely make it back to Kigali...
6pm: Welcome back home!
