In collaboration with Chef Ramadhan Sindayigaya, the first Rwandan winner of the Gorilla Highlands Silverchef cooking competition, we are inviting you to a retreat like no other!
We will be on Lake Burera’s Cyuza Island, a very special place. Cyuza’s inhabitants have been moved to the shore by the government to ease service provision, and a private investor has turned it into a paradise for budget travellers. This is a magnificent site for volcano views and water activities — but our program also includes a boat ride all around the lake!
In the evening Chef Rama will head a picnic that can have a complimentary online dimension if you desire so, to involve your family and friends who cannot join physically.
11am: The boat will collect you from Cyuma (a landing site near Rugarama on the Musanze — Cyanika road) and bring you to Cyuza Island. You will be safe in life jackets and the transfer will take only a couple of minutes. You will leave your luggage on the island and begin your Lake Burera cruise.
12pm: You will be first taken to Birwa I island, a 10-minute ride. The biggest of the islands, it hosts a primary school and a village. To spare you the climb, the youthful dancers, storytellers and craftmakers will come to the lakeshore to greet you.
12:30pm: The boat will continue towards Munanira, the island that fishermen often use as their base.
1pm: You will enjoy a real fishermen’s lunch on the island, their fish catch enriched with vegetables and staple foods especially for you. (If their current location is elsewhere, the itinerary will be adjusted accordingly.)
2:30pm: Your journey on the fine lake will proceed northwards, to the base of the mountain of Mweru where kings once walked on water and played table games. You will then proceed to the village of Gitare, hear about the mining history of this area, see the tomb of the man who started it, learn why there was never any genocide here and how people managed to hide, and finally learn about the magical tree that can help desperate people with ... you will see!
4pm: You will turn back towards Cyuza Island to reach the picnic in time.
5-6:30pm: Chef Rama will be serving you excellent picnic meals — as your loved ones who can’t be with you get a chance to participate virtually (on request).
Spacious tents will be ready for you whenever you feel like taking a break from the picnic. Even better: the staff of Cyuza Island are happy to lit your personal campfire in front of your cozy home!
This is your morning! Get into a kayak, go for a swim, walk around the island, or simply relax if you are so inclined. Breakfast will be at your convenience (served at the tent if you like), lunch will be together ... and in the afternoon we will have return to the mainland.
